Immersed in gospel music and traditional country growing up, Iris DeMent brings a raw vulnerability to her gospel-tinged melodies which has brought her both critical and popular acclaim. With several Grammy nominations for albums like My Life and The Way I Should, DeMent's song ''Our Town'' was played over the farewell scene in the series finale of Northern Exposure.
