Description

Ever wonder how Gloucester’s public library came to be? Join us for a special evening that explores the remarkable story of the Sawyer Free Library—from its 19th-century beginnings in the Gloucester Lyceum to its role today as a vibrant civic and cultural hub.

The program will feature a screening of Timeline Cape Ann: Sawyer Free Library, a short documentary written and produced by Kory Curcuru of 1623 Studios. The film traces the Library’s journey through nearly two centuries of growth, highlighting Samuel Sawyer’s vision in establishing one of the nation’s earliest free public libraries, and showing how that legacy continues to shape Gloucester’s civic life.

Following the screening, Kory Curcuru, Sawyer Free Library Local History Librarian Julie Travers and a few others will lead a panel discussion and audience Q&A, offering insight into the Library’s enduring role in education, culture, and community connection.

Come discover the people, stories, and moments that shaped the Sawyer Free Library—and celebrate the history of a public institution that continues to evolve with Gloucester.
