In the days before photography, portraits offered self-expression and family documentation, first to the wealthy colonial settlers, and then increasingly to the middle class. Itinerant artists of the late eighteenth and early nineteenth centuries, often self-taught, painted inexpensive portraits for rural families, and worked in a style whose charm still appeals today. Join Site Manager Kristen Weiss for an in-depth look at the collection of folk art portraits at Cogswell's Grant. Discover the many families and artists represented in the 1728 farmhouse, the summer home of renowned collectors Bertram K. and Nina Fletcher Little.
