Description

Join visual artist and Adjunct Professor at RISD, Clara Lieu as she reflects on the 2016 Presidential election as the Distinguished Artist/Teacher Goetemann Artist in Residence. Through her work Lieu aims to expose the experienced political unrest and uncertainty of the older generations of women and demonstrate to younger generations the tremendous resilience of their predecessors. "Scars that Speak” is a series of figurative graphite drawings created on tissue paper, which are then sculpted into three-dimensional drawings.

Lieu writes:

After the 2016 U.S. Presidential election, I watched Hillary Clinton pick herself up after a crushing defeat and give a concession speech with class, respect, and grace. Since that moment, I haven’t been able to stop thinking about what the 2016 election must have meant to the generations of older women who came before me. I realized that this past election was another agonizing chapter to what older women have seen and endured for decades.

I have been haunted by the way these generations of women have been torn to shreds and marginalized. Thinking about these older women, I felt ashamed that I had never thought about what they went through. Despite their deep scars, these women got back up, stood up, and kept walking.  I want to tell their stories, and show the immense strength of these women. I hope in this time of political unrest and uncertainty, that through my work, I can demonstrate to the younger generations the tremendous resilience of the older generations of women.

This program, which marks the 8th year of collaboration between Cape Ann Museum and Rocky Neck Art Colony for the Distinguished Artist/Teacher Goetemann Artist in Residence lecture, is free and open to the public.

Professor Lieu has received grants from the Berkshire Taconic Community Foundation and the Puffin Foundation and is a Partner in ART PROF: a free, online educational platform for visual arts.
